Joseph Rowntree Foundation – Places and Local Labour Markets

March 27, 2012 News No Comments

This call is for proposals for a research project which aims to explore the relationship between living in particular places, poverty outcomes and ethnicity by gaining a more in-depth understanding of why it is the case that:

  • Some areas produce better outcomes for ethnic minority groups in general;
  • Some areas produce poor outcomes for ethnic minority groups in general;
  • Some ethnic minority groups (and groups within them) have different outcomes in different places.

The research will unpick variations in the structure of opportunities within local labour markets, examine the role of local social networks and take a range of other factors into account, including: how local services are organised, the changing economic context, the migration history of different groups, local political structures and issues around housing and mobility. Application Form: Apply via online registration and application form.  Application guidelines available to downloadfrom website. Deadline: 11 April 2012 at 23:59.

Comic Relief International Grants

March 27, 2012 News No Comments

Comic Relief make grants to UK-registered charities (including charities registered in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man) whose main aim is development and who work closely with local organisations. Applications to our trade programme, and to the Enterprise and Employment programme under the Common Ground Initiative may be made from any UK registered organisation where they can show that all profits generated from the project will be reinvested in the project. In exceptional circumstances we will consider applications from other types of organisations. In these cases, there will need to be a discussion between a member of the grants team and the applicant, resulting in the applicant being invited to apply in writing.

They expect all applicants to share and discuss these guidelines with the local organisations they plan to work with. This will mean the application and budget has been jointly agreed and there is a clearly set out way of working together.

They fund all sizes of UK-registered charities. We also welcome applications that come from groups of UK-registered charities that can show how working together will improve the effectiveness of their work.

Wellcome Trust – Arts Awards

March 19, 2012 News No Comments

Wellcome believe the arts are an effective way of stimulating debate and engaging people with biomedical science. Visual art, music, moving image, creative writing and performance can reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. Collaborative and interdisciplinary practice across the arts and sciences can help to provide new perspectives on both fields. The arts can also provide imaginative ways of engaging and educating young people in the field of science.
Arts Awards support imaginative and experimental arts projects that investigate biomedical science.

The scheme aims to:

  • stimulate interest, excitement and debate about biomedical science through the arts
  • examine the social, cultural, and ethical impact of biomedical science
  • support formal and informal learning
  • encourage new ways of thinking
  • encourage high quality interdisciplinary practice and collaborative partnerships in arts, science and/or education practice.

All art forms are covered by the programme: dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. The Trust invites applications for projects which engage adult audiences and/or young people.

There are two levels of awards:

For small to medium-sized projects (up to and including £30 000) upcoming deadlines are 27 April 2012 , 27 July 2012 & 26 October Decisions will be made approximately three months after the relevant deadline.

Hedley Foundation

March 19, 2012 News No Comments

The main objective of the Trustees’ grant-making is to assist and encourage development and change.  It follows that most grants will be of capital or one-off nature, but the Trustees sometimes agree to help fund the introduction of new and innovative projects with a series of up to 3 annual grants.  Few grants exceed £5,000 and most of them go to charities where they can make an impact.  We do not support large or national appeals.

Applications for grants should be made on the application form available on the website

The application form should be downloaded, completed in typescript, printed off and sent by post to:

Mrs Pauline Barker, The Hedley Foundation, 1-3 College Hill, London EC4R 2RA Email: pbarker@hedleyfoundation.org.uk

and should be accompanied by your e-mail address or a self-addressed envelope (not necessarily stamped).
The Trustees meet six times a year. The closing date for a meeting is three weeks beforehand.

In 2012, the Trustees will meet on the following dates: 25th January; 14th March; 16th May; 18th July; 26th September; 21st November

All applications will be acknowledged, but, in the case of those short-listed, not until after they have been considered by the Trustees.
Last year the Foundation received 1,467 applications, of which less than two-thirds were within our criteria. They made 348 grants (averaging £3,000). Applicants should not be surprised or too disappointed if they are unsuccessful.

Main objective (currently about 70% of the Foundation’s budget)

Young people:  their education, recreation, support, training, health and welfare,

Subsidiary objectives

Disabled people and the terminally ill:  provision of specialist equipment and support for carers,

Creative people and places fund – Arts Council

March 19, 2012 News No Comments

The Arts Council will invest in a small number of places of greatest need to establish action research projects called Creative people and places. This investment will encourage long-term collaborations between local communities and arts organisations, museums, libraries and local authorities. It aims to empower them to experiment with radically different approaches and develop inspiring, sustainable arts programmes that will engage audiences in those communities.

Excellence will be central to the activity supported and although funding can only be guaranteed for three years, they would like to see applications which carry a 10-year vision for these communities.

A total of £37 million will be available to establish around 15 Creative people and places projects between autumn 2012 and autumn 2015. It is anticipated that the majority of proposals will be for between £500,000 and £3 million over three years.
