The Fund’s aim is helping young people at risk of criminal involvement to stay out of trouble and assist in the rehabilitation of offenders, particularly young offenders both in prison and after release. The Company prefers to help new projects in the early stages and, in particular, innovatory projects which could act as a model for similar work elsewhere; it sees its role as pump-priming and does not usually provide long-term funding, although it does sometimes provide more significant help to particular projects.

Applications are considered by the Charitable Grants Committee at their meetings in February, June and October. In considering whether a project is worthy of support and provided it meets all the Fund’s criteria, an assessment visit by a member of the Company is always made.

Benevolent Fund Priorities:

Helping disadvantaged young people

Offenders and ex-offenders, particularly those under 30 years of age

Special interest is in helping smaller organisations which offer direct services. They must be registered charities or in the process of applying for registration. Grants usually have an upper limit of £15,000 per annum, and to make sure grants of this size have an impact, they will not fund large organisations.

Applicants must show that they have investigated other sources of funding and made plans for the future, which should include replacement funding if appropriate.

To be eligible for funding, local organisations such as those working in a village, estate or small town should normally have an income of less than about £100,000. Those working across the UK should normally have an income of not more than about £250,000.

Funding Limit – Grants are usually up to £15,000 per annum but smaller applications are also welcomed.

Duration of funding – Grants may be awarded for up to three years.

Pump-priming - applications for pump-priming grants from small community-based organisations where our grant would form a major element of the funding are particularly welcome.

Project funding - Preference to support projects where our grant will be used for an identified purpose.

Associated Costs – For project funding, please make sure that the cost of any overheads associated with the work, such as office/secretarial supporty are included so that the project is not under-funded. It is in best interests to ensure the cost of the project has been realistically assessed.

Core costs - Applications for core funding is considered, such as general administration and training that enable an organisation to develop and maintain expertise. Only those organisations whose main purpose fits within the area of interest are eligible to apply..

Innovative or pioneering work -New ideas are encouraged and projects that could inspire similar work in other areas of the country.

Continuation funding - The importance of providing ongoing funding for successful projects, which have proved their worth is appreciated.

Salaries - Salaries available for up to three years but payment of the second and third year grants are subject to satisfactory progress reports. The company realises that things do not always run smoothly but need to know that the work is having a positive effect. In exceptional circumstances, they may consider funding a fourth year’s salary.

Emergency or deficit funding- In exceptional circumstances, they may provide emergency or deficit funding for an estab-lished organisation. Applicants most likely to be granted emergency funding are charities which the Company knows or has previously supported.

Application form and guidance are available on the website below. The Charitable Grants Committee meets in February, June and October of each year.

If an application is received less than 10 weeks before a meeting it is unlikely to be ready for consideration by the Committee. Any applications that arrive too late for consideration at one meeting are automatically rolled forward to the next.

The Foundation awards grants to individuals and institutions in the UK and Japan in all areas of the visual and performing arts, the humanities, the social sciences, science and engineering, mathematics, business studies, and education, including schools and universities, and grass roots and professional groups.
Grant-giving in 2012 will be carried out via the following programmes:

DAIWA FOUNDATION SMALL GRANTS
Grants of £3,000-£7,000 are available to individuals, societies, associations or other bodies in the UK or Japan to promote and support interaction between the two countries. Daiwa Foundation Small Grants can cover all fields of activity, including educational and grassroots exchanges, research travel, the organisation of conferences, exhibitions, and other projects and events that fulfil this broad objective. New initiatives are especially encouraged.

DAIWA FOUNDATION AWARDS
Awards of £7,000-£15,000 are available for collaborative projects that enable British and Japanese partners to work together, preferably in the context of an institutional relationship. Daiwa Foundation Awards can cover projects in most academic, professional, arts, cultural and educational fields. (Support for scientific collaborations is separately provided through The Royal Society-Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation Joint Project Grants scheme.)

The Baring Foundation was set up in 1969 to give money to charities and voluntary organisations pursuing charitable purposes. In 41 years we have given almost £100 million in grants. Our budget for grant-making in 2010 is £2.5 million.

They have specific grants programmes concerned with the arts, international development and strengthening the voluntary sector.

The Joint International Development programme 2010, in collaboration with the John Ellerman Foundation, is now open. They especially encourage applications from African-led voluntary organisations based in the UK fitting these requirements.

The purpose of the Joint International Development Grants Programme is to improve the effectiveness of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations (CBOs) in Sub-Saharan Africa to address problems arising from the longterm forced displacement of people. This does not include economic migration.

The Foundations will accept applications from registered charities, voluntary and constituted not-for-profit organisations in the UK which have had an income of over £150,000 and less than £15 million for each of the last two years. This includes the global income for federated organisations. Such UK charities will need to have close working partnerships with non-governmental and community-based organisations in Sub-Saharan Africa and to seek to benefit people disadvantaged or marginalised by long-term forced displacement. Organisations (including those in consortia) may make only one application in each annual funding round.
We especially encourage applications from African-led voluntary organisations based in the UK fitting these requirements.
Partner NGOs or CBOs can be in a single country or more than one country. The bid must be jointly developed with the partner.
If you are in any doubt about your organisation’s eligibility, you should contact the Baring Foundation’s staff for advice before preparing your application.

Applicants can apply for grants of up to five years. We have a preference for applications of at least three years duration and an indicative budget is acceptable for later years. The maximum size of a grant is £250,000. The amount of funding in each year can vary according to the needs of the project.

The timetable for 2012 is: 21 December 2011 guidelines issued 29 March 2012 deadline for submission of outline proposals 11 July 2012 selection of applicants for second stage 30 August 2012 deadline for submission of full proposals 8/9 October 2012 presentations made to a joint committee and decisions made.

The Speak Up Fund is run by the Community Film Unit to partially fund films for organisations and groups that are dedicated to their local communities. The Fund aspires to make high-quality film available to organisations who have either not considered it before, never had access to professional training, or been unable to justify the costs of producing their own film resources.

They are looking for applications from organisations across England who are planning filmmaking projects in 2012. Applications will be considered for any projects that include a filmmaking component, including (but not limited to):

Making a promotional film for your organisation

Documenting change in a community over a longer time period

Providing filmmaking training and workshops

They particularly welcome applications from Social Enterprises, Community Interest Companies, and any volunteer organisations that work extensively with their local communities.

The deadline for applications is 5pm on the 2nd of March. They will review every submission, and award up to 50% match funding to successful applications based on individual merit and the nature of each proposed project. Succesful applicants will be notified throughout May and June.
They are very keen to support organisations whose work includes:

Supporting young people and/or vulnerable people in their local community

Preserving local history and educating residents about their area

Providing and documenting opportunities for the disabled

Developing their community and encouraging integration between different groups
