Wellcome Trust – Arts Awards

March 19, 2012 News No Comments

Wellcome believe the arts are an effective way of stimulating debate and engaging people with biomedical science. Visual art, music, moving image, creative writing and performance can reach new audiences which may not traditionally be interested in science and provide new ways of thinking about the social, cultural and ethical issues around contemporary science. Collaborative and interdisciplinary practice across the arts and sciences can help to provide new perspectives on both fields. The arts can also provide imaginative ways of engaging and educating young people in the field of science.
Arts Awards support imaginative and experimental arts projects that investigate biomedical science.

The scheme aims to:

  • stimulate interest, excitement and debate about biomedical science through the arts
  • examine the social, cultural, and ethical impact of biomedical science
  • support formal and informal learning
  • encourage new ways of thinking
  • encourage high quality interdisciplinary practice and collaborative partnerships in arts, science and/or education practice.

All art forms are covered by the programme: dance, drama, performance arts, visual arts, music, film, craft, photography, creative writing or digital media. The Trust invites applications for projects which engage adult audiences and/or young people.

There are two levels of awards:

For small to medium-sized projects (up to and including £30 000) upcoming deadlines are 27 April 2012 , 27 July 2012 & 26 October Decisions will be made approximately three months after the relevant deadline.

Creative people and places fund – Arts Council

March 19, 2012 News No Comments

The Arts Council will invest in a small number of places of greatest need to establish action research projects called Creative people and places. This investment will encourage long-term collaborations between local communities and arts organisations, museums, libraries and local authorities. It aims to empower them to experiment with radically different approaches and develop inspiring, sustainable arts programmes that will engage audiences in those communities.

Excellence will be central to the activity supported and although funding can only be guaranteed for three years, they would like to see applications which carry a 10-year vision for these communities.

A total of £37 million will be available to establish around 15 Creative people and places projects between autumn 2012 and autumn 2015. It is anticipated that the majority of proposals will be for between £500,000 and £3 million over three years.

Consultation Event for the Voluntary & Community Sector Infrastructure in Manchester

February 27, 2012 News No Comments

Macc

There are two separate consultation events. You may wish to attend one or both.

Description of event:

MACC would like to invite you to a special voluntary sector consultation.  These events have been arranged throughout the city, over a number of days, to look at the development and changes to Voluntary and Community Sector Infrastructure in Manchester.

Macc’s role in the voluntary sector is evolving. As part of that we have committed to reviewing the management, governance and structure of Macc but above all to consult with the local sector about the kinds of support and activities you want us to run.  We are now in a position to start this process however; we don’t want this to be a one-off exercise: it’s an ongoing dialogue. Our vision is that the consultation should be owned by and accountable to the local sector but we need your help.  Please attend a session and let us know what you want from us now and in the future.

Portas Pilots

February 20, 2012 News No Comments

They are running a competition for local partnerships to bid for a share of £1 million.

The competition will select 12 towns to become ‘Portas Pilots’, with the winners benefiting from a share of £1 million to help turn around their “unloved and unused” high streets.

The pilot projects, led by local partnerships and consortiums in England, will be supported with funding of up to £100,000 per pilot as well as advice from a Whitehall Team and Mary Portas.

Eligible partnerships must identify an Accountable Body (local authority) to receive the grant, if they are not, themselves, a local authority.

It is expected that local authorities in receipt of the grant will work constructively with their communities, through their Town Team, in using the funding.

Proposals will be assessed on the following criteria:

Worshipful Company of Weavers

February 20, 2012 News No Comments

The Fund’s aim is helping young people at risk of criminal involvement to stay out of trouble and assist in the rehabilitation of offenders, particularly young offenders both in prison and after release.   The Company prefers to help new projects in the early stages and, in particular, innovatory projects which could act as a model for similar work elsewhere; it sees its role as pump-priming and does not usually provide long-term funding, although it does sometimes provide more significant help to particular projects.

Applications are considered by the Charitable Grants Committee at their meetings in February, June and October. In considering whether a project is worthy of support and provided it meets all the Fund’s criteria, an assessment visit by a member of the Company is always made.
